Common Risperdal Side Effects

Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen Pharmaceuticals division, Risperdal has proven to be quite profitable for its makers. Risperdal has generated billions of dollars in sales. Unfortunately, the drug is linked to all sorts of physical and mental maladies as well as injuries. The drug is commonly connected to a heightened risk of stroke as well as death in senior patients who suffer from dementia. It is also claimed that Risperdal causes or catalyzes the onset of diabetes, weight gain and seizures.

Risperdal’s Role in Causing Gynecomastia

While the side effects described above are quite horrifying, there are even more allegations that the drug has caused extensive health problems in young men and boys. It is claimed that Risperdal prompts the onset of a condition called gynecomastia. This condition causes a significant enlargement of breast tissue in males.

Though it is not believed that gynecomastia causes cancer, enlarged breasts on a male can result in a number of problems. For one, enlarged breasts are quite painful. They sag and strain the back. Many of those who took Risperdal claim that the drug caused not only gynecomastia but also spurred the formation of egregiously enlarged nipples along with very painful nipple discharges.

It is also important to note that young men and boys who suffer from gynecomastia have to deal with accompanying embarrassment. For many, the resulting psycho-social harm lingers in their minds for years to come. Some gynecomastia sufferers decide to have surgery to correct the condition. Such a procedure is expensive, painful and quite annoying. Though scientists do not fully understand the alleged connection between Risperdal and gynecomastia, it is alleged that the drug drastically boosts the body’s level of a hormone called prolactin that is naturally stored within the blood. This hormone catalyzes breast tissue development in the human body. However, it is only naturally present in substantial quantities in women.

The fact that many claim that levels of prolactin soar in young men who take Risperdal is a testament to this drug’s seemingly inherent danger. Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen division admits the drug can cause hyperpolactinemia that results from increased prolactin. Results from excessive prolactin include the generation of breast milk. This is an awfully troubling development for young men who thought Risperdal would improve their mental health without any nasty side effects.

Other Risperdal Side Effects

The list of side effects and injuries allegedly caused by Risperdal seems to have no end. In addition to the problems outlined above, Risperdal is also commonly linked to general muscle weakness, irregular heartbeats, constipation, high fevers, excessive fatigue, aching limbs, restlessness, dizziness, sensitivity to heat and headaches. Some even claim the drug causes extrapyramidal symptoms such as muscle tremors and muscle disturbances. Additionally, it is believed that Risperdal negatively impacts a person’s ability to drive an automobile.
